Olympics

It's been very strange to watch the Olympics here. It so much lower key than in Australia, without anything like the hype. There is an expectation that none of the British athletes are going to win medals, which takes a lot of the fun out of it, I suppose. There's not even much about it in the papers, except a bit of speculation about Ian Thorpe's sexuality... and he's Australian! The British have strange heroes as well: their female marathon runner, who, despite the rest of the country's gloomy certainty of defeat, thought she had a chance, collapsed as soon as it became clear she wasn't going to get a medal and didn't even finish the course. She was hailed as a great champion who had run in impossible conditions and the Americans were blamed for insisting the race be run at a certain time. The Americans might be responsible for a hell of a lot of what's wrong with the world, but I don't think they can take the blame for that, when it didn't stop the other athletes finishing!

Hello Hello! I thought I would do my best to avoid the Olympics - but it hasn't happened. I was watching the telly before work and noticed the medal count - and didn't see the UK there. It's funny, isn't it, that Australia picks up so many medals. I know that our sports 'heroes' are pretty heavily subsidised.

And as for poor Thorpie - will they ever leave him alone? When I saw him once on the cover of Who magazine talking about his obsessions - one of which was Kylie Minogue - I thought he was coming out in a big way. I think he's evil anyway, selling his crappy underwear line.

I laughed at your entry on Edith Sitwell. She was madly inlove a Russian artist. IT was so embarrassing to read about.

She tried taking DH Lawrence to court, because she claimed he lampooned her parents in Lady Chatterly's Lover (I think that was the story). ANyway, she maintained the house used in the novel was based on the Sitwell family home.

Weather here is getting warmer. Hooray!! Hope you, the Doctor, and Baby are all doing well. chris XXXXX
