Polenta Lament

It's really hard to buy polenta here. Londoners love everything pre-packaged and ready prepared... so you can buy it as a gooey, shrink- wrapped, stabliser-fortified pad, but if you want to lovingly prepare it yourself, as my tutor Chris Saliba taught me, you're in trouble. Hell, it only takes 3 minutes or so to cook it! The collapsing of time is becoming ridiculous and takes all the creativity out of life... what kind of cheese would I add, how much salt, how about some chilli... so you end up traversing London seeking real ingredients. Kaffir lime leaves? Dried, no problem, but fresh... Rice noodles? What are they? And this is meant to be a multicultural city!

Talk about Polenta Palare. I don't ever remember giving instructions on how to cook polenta. If so, it must have been the blind leading the blind. Yes, it does cook really quick. Plus the fact that it all of a sudden gets so thick and demands constant stirring can give you a bad case of RSI.

As for what caused Charlotte Bronte's death, I think there have been quite a few theories as to what killed her. I too have read that it was her pregnancy. It's the saddest thing in the world when you read her letters saying how happy she was, and that what made her happy also killed her.

I think Mrs Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Bronte quotes the letters saying how happy she was. I know that book quotes quite extensively. Interestingly, Mrs Gaskell was no fan of Charlotte's writing. From memory Mrs Gaskell said something along the lines of...'I don't like the love, neither the type or the degree' (referring to the novels). Too much S & M for the witty social writer in Charlotte's lurid plots.

Weather is currently freeeeezing in Melbourne. I hate it. It was sunny, but I think about 12 degrees.

Plus, i have had TWO flat tyres over the last two days. I spend 40 minutes walking how yesterday, or early this morning rather. Got home at 1pm!

My regards to the Doctor....................
